Legal Prosthetics

Legal Prosthetics

Could you live on a parking lot if you were a car?

In this workshop participants design and produce a prototype of a Legal Prosthesis - a wearbale artefact that alters your legal status, providing new possibilities for the wearer.

This workshop is also a practical introduction to making and using video scenarios - a valuable tool for communication concepts and prototypes in action.

Like the Action Space Boxing worksop, Legal Prosthetics also intends to provoke discussion on the often instrumental, or problem-solving, nature of design. How to find a balance between individualistic, yet constructive, over-simplification and the paralysing complexity of social and political realities? Perhaps there is good reason for the slowness of the legislative process in democratic societies?

The Design Brief

This was the task given to the Fashion and Technology students at K3 in February 2007:

Mission:

Design a wearable artefact that alters your legal action space. Communicate your concept through one or more concise and convincing video scenario(s).

Means:

The world is full of materials!
Digital Camera
Simple Editing Software (Windows Movie Maker or iMovie)

Deliverables:

Monday February 12 at latest 1700 hours there should be a Youtube-link to your movie in UNSWORN's inbox. The same Monday 18.00 to 20.00 each group will get 15 minutes to present their concept to the group and the external critics. You are welcome to bring any props you used for the video.

Your concepts and presentations will be assesed by three stern professional designers, Jenny Nordberg, Magnus Torstensson, and Erik Sandelin. You will be evaluated on:
- how well your concept corresponds with the design brief
- how innovative your concept is
- how well it is crafted
- how well your video communicates your concept
...and of course its legal validity!

Have fun!
